Lingonberries and Their health Benefits

Also known as vaccinium vitis-idaea, lingonberries are really red tart berries found mainly in Scandinavia among the wild shrubs. They form a key part of Nordic cuisine. They are the distant cousins of the cranberry fruit and are a lot juicier and smaller than other berries. They are also great source of pectins and preservatives. Lingonberries have potent levels of minerals and essential vitamins. Here are some of the nutritional Benefits of consuming lingonberries.

Often called the ‘Queen of Berries,'lingonberries serves both as a choleretic and diuretic and is also known to strengthen the capillary tube. They are also cardiotonic.

It is believed that one of the potent sources of polyphenols is the pearly red lingonberries. They are filled with berry biocomplex which is said to deliver an anti-sclerotic effect. These berries are also seen as a rich source of copper, which is said to be essential in the treatment of pancreatic diabetes.

The lingonberry is currently being used by many people as a cure or to treat gastric ulcers, hypertony, gastritis, and liver ailments. Due to its ability to regulate how salt is metabolized in the body, it is believed to be effective in the treatment of diseases such as rheumatism, uratic arthritis, and renal lithiasis. It also possesses antiseptic properties making it a good astringent.

Lingonberry has tannins said to help in neutralizing toxins, resolve mineral metabolism, and boosting the blood vessel walls. Thus it improves digestion and tones up the body. It may be best to keep some of these berries in one of your gym lockers.

Lingonberries are being promoted as a urinary tract infection cure. Since they contain short-chained proanthocyans said to prevent the infection causing bacteria from clinging to the walls of the bladder.

When taken with cranberry juice on a regular basis the risk of urinary tract infection is likely to be reduced in women by as much as forty percent.
